Hallasan Mountain, the Power of Jeju

The source of Jeju SamDaSoo is under a superbly-preserved primeval forest near Hallasan National Park, free and far from contamination.Hallasan Mountain is one of the three most sacred mountains in Korea. Located off the southernmost point of the Korean peninsula, the peak stands 1,950 meters above sea level – the tallest in the nation. Thanks to its biodiversity, Hallasan Mountain is highly regarded by scholars, and was designated as Natural Monument #182 on October 12, 1966 to protect the natural flora and fauna as part of the Hallasan Conservation Zone.

Tracing its origin back to the Quaternary Period of the Cenozoic Era, Hallasan Mountain is a young volcano that was active until 25,000 years ago. Near the mountain are some 360 volcanic cones, adding unique features to the local landscape created by the magnificent Hallasan Mountain standing tall at the center of the island. The beauty that is both benevolent and stern is admired by many, as it reveals a variety of colors in different seasons. The awe-inspiring mountain was designated as a national park on March 24, 1970 and added to the list of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in December 2002.

Beautiful with primeval charm, Hallasan Mountain and Jeju Island are gifts that God has given to us. An invaluable heritage to be protected and cherished by the world, Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes became Korea’s first natural heritage to be recognized by UNESCO on June 27, 2007.

Jeju SamDaSoo–18 Years, 420 Meters

Jeju SamDaSoo is pure water filtered clean over 18 years through layers of volcanic rock that go down 420 meters underground.

Jeju was formed by volcanic activity that began 1.9 million years ago and ended about 5,000 years ago. Comprised of lava beds 2-3 meters thick and sedimentary layers stacked on top of one another, the island’s strata act as one massive natural water filter.

When it hits the ground, rainwater (including melted snow) flows through the cracks and gaps of the lava bed and slowly permeates deep underground. Filtered pure and clean during the process, Jeju SamDaSoo is the result of going through the earth’s largest natural water filter.According to a study (2001) by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Jeju SamDaSoo is 18 years old.

JejuSamdasoo - Perfected by Scoria and Vesicular Basalt

Above the ground and under, Jeju’s layers are abundant in scoria, clinker and vesicular basalt that are superb in filtering contaminants. Thanks to these geological features, Jeju Samdasoo has earned a reputation as pure water, free from heavy metals and other harmful substances. This is supported by a study conducted by Professor Ho-won Lee and his team from Jeju National University’s Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering, which in 2017 explored how scoria purifies contaminants. The study found that while widely-used activated carbon could not remove cadmium (Cd) completely three hours after the experiment had begun, scoria did just the opposite even after 24 hours. The study demonstrates scoria’s excellent ability to remove heavy metals.
